Massachusetts Library Association - Strategic Planning Information
In July 2015, MLA President Eric Poulin and the Executive Board, voted to extend the current strategic plan by one year and begin a new planning process. In the fall a consultant (Leger-Hornby Consulting Services) was selected. After the initial board meeting with the consultant in December 2015, the board sent a survey to members asking for perceptions on the association. Results are posted below. In March 2016, after reviewing the feedback from members, the Board decided to engage in a more in-depth study and exploration of issues and options. They voted to extend planning for the next year and to form a special strategic planning committee. Eric Poulin (former president) and Alex Lent (incoming president) were named co-chairs. Information on progress and the results of the survey were presented at the MLA annual meeting in Hyannis.
On September 23, 2016, a strategic planning retreat was held at Tower Hill. Members of the Strategic Planning Committee, the Board, and other stakeholders were invited. The retreat focused on completing a SOAR (strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results) exercise, a discussion on the possible rewording of the mission of MLA, and a short brainstorming session on possible goals for MLA in the coming 3 to 5 years. Notes on the retreat activities can be found at the bottom of this page.
Focus Groups & Approval
A series of focus groups for interested members and stakeholders were held during the months of November and early December 2016. Following the focus groups, the Strategic Planning Committee reviewed all feedback and other data and began working on a draft set of goals.
The Committee presented their recommendations for the plan at the January 13, 2017 Administrative Board meeting.
Following the preliminary review of the draft set of goals, members were asked for feedback and input. The Strategic Planning Committee continued to develop more specific goals and operational objectives during February and March 2017. The MLA Executive Board approved the Plan at their March 3, 2017 meeting and the Plan was then presented and approved by members at the May 2017 Annual Meeting.
